Mosaid Technologies Inc. is initiating patent infringement litigation against 17 companies, claiming that they have all used its patented wi-fi technology without a licence.

Major companies involved in the suit include Waterloo-based BlackBerry maker Research in Motion and Intel. Also included in the suit are Wasp Barcode Technologies, Venture Research, Marvell Semiconductor, and Ralink Technology.

Mosaid, an Ottawa-based firm, has over 2,000 patents related to semiconductors and telecommunications systems and issues licences for its intellectual property.

Quoth the Globe and Mail:

The suit was filed on March 16 in the eastern district of Texas in the U.S. District Court, Mosaid (MSD-T29.350.311.07%) said in a news release.

“Since 2008, we have licensed our portfolio of wireless patents and applications to 15 companies that have recognized the value of thisintellectual property,” said chief executive John Lindgren. “We believe that all companies offering products that implement the WiFi standard require a license to our wireless patents,” he said.

Even without these companies supposedly paying for licences, Mosaid's profit per share for the last quarter were 61 cents per share, up from 21 cents per share a year prior, and its quarterly earnings were up over $2 million year-over-year.
