PEER 1 Hosting recently released a video tour of their new, 41,000 square foot flagship datacentre located in Toronto. Geoff Ois, senior account executive, provides the behind-the-scenes tour, starting from the security fencing outside to inside the datacentre server PODs, to the secured chiller water cooling system and UPS power generator rooms. I don't know much about datacentres, so it's neat to access one virtually like this.

It looks a little like a prison, but it's still impressive and definitely state-of-the-art. See for yourself below.

Some of the more interesting facts about the datacentre:

  • Able to house 30,000 servers
  • Over 15,000 miles of fiber around the world
  • Trees were relocated during construction ("green" purposes)
  • High efficiency white membrane roof reflects UV rays and heat
  • Equipped with a biometric (thumb scan) lock for added security
