Red Herring Canada will host its first annual Top 50 Awards at Mont Tremblant on September 16th as part of the Red Herring Canada 08 Conference and today they announced the finalists. The Top 50 Awards are meant to celebrate the most innovative and promising technology companies in Canada.

I know first-hand of a company that was told they were in the Top 50, provided of course that they purchased a ticket to the event. They didn't purchase the ticket and, surprise they are now not on the top 50 list.
Red Herring has been completely discredited in recent years (check out the great stuff on Valleywag) and it's really sad to see that they are effectively tricking often cash-strapped start-ups into parting with money so they can win non-awards.
With the deadline to purchase ticket events being the 29th of August, and the finalists announced on the 26th of August, how can this be true?
