Research in Motion has acquired Dash Navigation, creator of the Dash Express in car GPS system. Dash Navigation had been struggling with its first business model which charged its Dash Express users a monthly subscription fee. Competitors like Garmin which offered their service free with the purchase of a GPS unit proved to be more popular with consumers. Lately Dash Navigation has been concentrating on licensing its software to other hardware manufactures.

Details are still scarce on RIM’s acquisition of the company, the purchase has been confirmed by Rim, but the purchase price is still unknown. There is also now word on how the GPS service will be offered to its customers, most carriers charge extra monthly fees for GPS navigation.
