Waterloo-based Research Motion is Canada's leading company in research and development spending, according to new datafrom Research Infosource.

Based on fiscal 2010, Infosourced report, titled “Canada’s source of Research and Development intelligence,” revealed that RIM invested $1.4 billion in 2010. This was up 26% from 2009.

Other R&D spenders in the tech space include the Big Three telcos. Bell invested a heavy $821 million, ranking second but Telus and Rogers each invested just $124 million each. IBM was third with $551 million (invested in Canadian operations).

Sadly, companies can make this list with as little in $12.8 million in R&D spending.
