RIM sets crosshairs on digital music

RIM, while still lagging main competitors Apple and Google, is at least not resting on any laurels.

The Waterloo firm is repotedly plotting a digital music sharing service that would be deeply integrated with one of its smartphones' core features, BlackBerry Messenger.

The new service is expected to launch within a month or two and cost around $10 per month. It would allow BlackBerry users to send songs to friends also subscribed to the service via BBM.

It feels a little limited—it's so Spotify, for example—but it should be availble in Canada and at any rate adds something to RIM's diminished arsenal of competitive advantages.
