Rogers Media announces new President

by Darren Anderson

It was announced today that Keith Pelley will take the helm as President of Rogers Media. Mr. Pelley is well known for his role as President of Canada’s Olympic Broadcast Media Consortium, a partnership between CTVglobemedia and Rogers Communications.

Mr. Pelley has some pretty big shoes to fill as Rogers Media has experienced some pretty impressive financial results under long time Rogers Media President and CEO Tony Viner, who announced his retirement a couple months ago. Over the past five years, total revenue for Rogers Media has increased more than 28 per cent, from slightly less than $1.1 billion in 2005 to a little more than $1.4 billion in 2009. During the same period of time the operating unit produced modest profit figures compared to Rogers’ other operating units, most recently clearing $73 million in 2009.

Mr. Pelley brings an impressive resume to his current post. Beginning his career as an Editorial Assistant at TSN in 1986, Mr. Pelley worked his way up to Senior News Producer and Event Producer at TSN. He left the Canadian sports broadcaster in 1995 for a brief stint at FOX Sports before returning to TSN in 1997 as Senior Vice-President of Programming and Production. A couple years later Mr. Pelley took the helm as President of TSN before joining the Toronto Argonauts Football Club as President and CEO in 2003, where he guided the football club to a Grey Cup title in 2004. He then moved on and joined CTV, which promoted him to Executive Vice-President of Strategic Planning just a couple months ago.

Mr. Pelley will report directly to Nadir Mohamed, President & CEO of Rogers Communications. Rogers Media is comprised of radio and television broadcasting, publishing, sports entertainment and on-line properties. The division of Rogers Communications includes the Toronto Blue Jays Baseball Club and Rogers Centre.
