See News Break All Over the World in Real-Time on This Live Map (Maybe One Day?)

Gingle is a Moncton, New Brunswick-based startup with the ambitious goal of capturing the entire world's breaking news in real-time by pulling video uploads cross-platform. Unfortunately, while the idea is interesting, the early execution is quite poor.

The startup is in beta—or so I must assume, though it's not stated on the site—and lacks a lot of the polish most of today's budding companies have. For example, the overwhelming majority of "breaking news" is happening in Atlantic Canada—where the company was founded—with virtually nothing else going on throughout the rest of Canada, and, really, the whole world. Beyond that, the so-called breaking news isn't really breaking news at all. It's mostly junk.

Gingle's "about" page is only a single sentence with no image and it's "blog" has only one post, the default "Hello world!" that Wordpress auto-publishes by default. And its categories dropdown menu only works when you're on the main page, but shows up throughout, which could leave visitors confused by non-functioning links. The search page has a bad joke—"Apologies, but the page you requested could not be found. Perhaps searching will help"—that could be funny if the rest of the site wasn't so rough that you actually believe it's a real error. There's also an unexplained, unclickable sumo wrestler on the bottom navigation bar accomplishing absolutely nothing from what I can tell.

The startup's more promising component is its mobile app, which clearly has had much more time and effort invested into than the website. However, "gingling" my local area of Vancouver still turns up nothing; it's a barren wasteland, just like the site.

Gingle has potential. But it needs a lot of work.
