Set sail as Captain of the Monkey Navy in XMG Studio's new mobile adventure, Powder Monkeys

Powder monkeys were a part of warship crews during the Age of Sail from the 16th to 18th century. Actually human, these so-called "monkeys" carried bags of gunpowder from the ship's hold to the gun crew. Boys or teens, short and fast, powder monkeys were an integral part of successful pirating.

The term has has taken on a new meaning in 2011.

Toronto-based developer XMG Studio is the maker of the upcoming mobile game Powder Monkeys, in which actual monkeys combat oversized bugs in a post-Ice Age world. In Powder Monkeys, players sail the high seas as a Captain in the Monkey Navy to defend against a hostile insect takeover. What looks neat about this vibrant-looking game are options like custom ship design and an array of unique quests and islands to explore and conquer.

“Powder Monkeys combines the exploration and adventure of a role-playing game with a battle mechanic that has a tower defense feel,” says Ray Sharma, founder and CEO of XMG Studio, “There’s nothing like this game in the App store, it has a bit of everything — action, exploration, combat, and an epic good vs. bad battle featuring monkeys and bugs. What more could you want! Arrrrrr!”

Starting out with a lack of gold, reputation, and knowledge of the sea, players must complete quests, plunder treasure and battle bug pirates to gather experience and resources. Players will be able to upgrade their ship's equipment using Monkey Coins and Golden Banana Coins.

Powder Monkeys will launch on the iPhone this Fall.
