Last week Ottawa's Shopify announced they were donating $100,000 to the Acumen Fund to mark they're 5th anniversary.

The Acumen Fund is a nonprofit venture fund that invests in social enterprises, emerging leaders, and breakthrough ideas and will use the donation to support pioneering entrepreneurs who are focused on providing critical services such water, health, housing, and energy in their native countries.

While the generous donation is great news, Techvibes was a little more interested in some of the business milestones that Shopify included in their press release.

Did you know that Shopify's e-commerce platform was responsible for $124 Million in Gross Merchandise Volume in 2010 and rung up $95 Million in the first half of 2011?

And that there are 16,000 stores powered by Shopify in 79 countries around the world that have conducted tens of millions of transactions to date.

Shopify was founded in 2006 and has over 60 employees. In December Shopify announced that they had raised $7 million in Series A funding from Bessemer Venture Partners, FirstMark Capital, and Felicis Ventures. Cha-ching.

The first Shopify store was our own - it did what it was supposed to, and it did it well. After seeing its success, we realized that we could provide this tool to others, and help them sell their products online. At Shopify we stand for simplicity, elegance, and common sense, and we hope to infuse those qualities in everything we do. more
