Canadian Dating App SinglesAroundMe Sees 300% Download Increase Ahead of Valentine's Day

Ottawa-based social discovery mobile GPS dating app SinglesAroundMe is reporting a 300% surge in daily downloads across Android, BlackBerry, and iPhone app stores ahead of Valentine's Day tomorrow.

The app uses GPS to introduce users to singles in their neighbourhood, creating the opportunity for singles to "serendipitously" meet someone who shares similar interests around them. The app was built here in Canada but works anywhere in the world (assuming other singles are using it nearby).

The company says that, unlike other location-based mobile dating apps, SAM utilizes geographical mapping to plot the location of nearby singles who could even be next door. The entire experience is more real, immediate, social and a real-time saver for busy people, according to SAM.

“Users are becoming more at ease with this new way of dating," says founder Christ Klotz. "They are finding it more fun and actually better than traditional online dating.”

The latest update to the app (for iOS and Android) added more control over how users' locations are revealed to others:

The just released next generation SAM iPhone and Android apps provides users with peace of mind while using the app. Users can now choose exactly how much—if any—of their actual location on maps they want to share; they can choose to keep it Exact, Hidden or now Approximate, which displaces their precise location on maps by approximately three kilometers.

"What this means for users is they now have complete control of their privacy," the company explains. "If they are at home and want to hide their location they can do so, but if they choose to switch their location to 'Approximate,' it displaces them outside of their immediate neighborhood. If they are out or feeling engaged they could switch their location to exact and meet people close by."

Download the Android app here, the  iPhone app here, or the Blackberry app here. Not that it appears to run poorest on iOS. Android users rate the app 4.1 out five and BlackBerry users rate it 3.5 out of five, but on the App Store it is rated a very low 1.5 out five stars.

Launched in 2010, SinglesAroundMe has more than one million users in over 100 countries.
