Smartphone wars heat up: Mobilicity carrying Google's Nexus One
Back in July, we announced that Google was putting their smartphone device to bed. At the time Google said:
This week we received our last shipment of Nexus One phones. Once we sell these devices, the Nexus One will no longer be available online from Google. Customer support will still be available for current Nexus One customers. And Nexus One will continue to be sold by partners including Vodafone in Europe, KT in Korea, and possibly others based on local market conditions.
Seems that Canada is one of those possible local markets. And Mobilicity is the company that stands to benefit. As of a couple of days ago Mobilicity announced it would be carrying the Nexus One smartphone.
Available soon for $549.99, the Nexus One is designed to simultaneously run 3D graphics, online applications and multiple programs running in the background without slowing down.
Mobilicity made this announcement as Rogers was announcing that Research in Motion's BlackBerry Torch smartphone was finally becoming available via online ordering.
It will be interesting to see where things go. Traditionally, the period between back-to-school and Christmas has been the most competitive in the mobile marketplace.
