Square Opening Permanent Office in Kitchener, Will House 30 Engineers for Special Project

Square announced this week that it will open a permanent office in Kitchener-Waterloo. The office will be located at 305 King Street in downtown Kitchener and will open this spring, according to the Silicon Valley-based company.

We knew about this office since last year, but it wasn't until now that Square made it official. In July 2013, Square moved into a coworking space in Kitchener-Waterloo that accommodated only a handful of employees. The new office will allow Square to expand its Canadian team to more than 30 employees, mostly in engineering.

"We are thrilled to be part of Kitchener-Waterloo's thriving and talented tech community," said Demetrios Marantis, head of international government, regulatory, and policy work at Square. "We're excited by how much more we can do to empower local sellers by establishing a Square office in Kitchener and deepening our commitment to the country."

Setting up an office in Kitchener-Waterloo was important to Twitter and Square founder Jack Dorsey to continue to tap into the engineering wealth from the universities in the city. “Waterloo has been fantastic,” he said last year. “The engineering talent that we have managed to bring on to the team from that school is stunning."

Dorsey has drawn parallels between the growing Kitchener-Waterloo tech community and Silicon Valley, saying “Waterloo has a similar energy."

The team in Kitchener will apparently be building a special product with a global reach—Dorsey is quoted only as saying "it's quite exciting."
