Student app developers ready to throw down at the Battle of the Apps

Microsoft is pitting student mobile developers against each other in a battle royale of app development, and is hoping that Windows 7 users will be the ultimate winners.

Student developers and designers are invited to submit their apps to Microsoft’s Battle of the Apps to win great prizes and have their app sold by Microsoft. If you are working on a Windows Phone 7 app, upload it to the App Hub and Marketplace, and create a photo or video presentation explaining why your app should be a winner. You could win a Windows Phone 7 or a trip to Australia to attend Tech-Ed 2011 — but all entrants will benefit from the free marketing that comes with this contest, which could result in big sales numbers for your app.

The competition consists of three rounds, with three finalists chosen from each round. The contest is currently in round one of three, which ends February 15th. Rounds two and three will be open for submissions from March 15th to April 15th and May 15th to June 15th respectively. Microsoft encourages developers to enter multiple apps to increase their chances of winning.

The judging panel consists of some big players in the mobile world, both from Microsoft and third-party companies. The panel consists of:

  • Christian Beauclair, senior developer advisor, Microsoft Canada
  • Joey DeVilla, “developer evangelist,” Microsoft Canada
  • Bradley Smith, senior interaction designer, Habañero Consulting Group
  • Rahul Agarwal, co-founder/director of new product development, Polar Mobile
  • Matthieu Houle, mobile and platform director, Yellow Pages Group

The panel will be looking at a variety of criteria when evaluating prospective apps. Those criteria are design, usability, stability, engagement, sociability, cloud integration and votes from the public.

If you hope to make a career out of mobile development, or you’ve already started to, don’t miss out on this opportunity to build a portfolio and maybe even earn profits. Get ready for some serious competition — I would say that Battle of the Apps makes app development on like Donkey Kong, but I don’t feel like getting sued.
