Sweet Deal: Research in Motion launches new promotion for Canadians upgrading their BlackBerrys

Waterloo's Research In Motion is launching a new promotion, encouraging Canadians to upgrade their older BlackBerrys to newer, 3G-capable ones by offering discounts on new devices when consumers cash in their outdated models.

The new program is titled the BlackBerry Trade Up. It offers BlackBerry users an incentive up to $120 to trade an old device for a new one.

By old, I mean semi-old, not your ancient beast from 2002; users must trade in a working BlackBerry Curve, Bold, Pearl, Tour, or Storm.

Quoth the Financial Post:

According to the FAQ section of the Website, the trade in value of the device is based on the model being returned as well as its condition. Users will then receive a sales credit that can be applied to the purchase of a new BlackBerry device. Users have 30 days from the purchase of their new device to send the old one back to RIM to qualify.

RIM won’t be accepting any devices that have suffered water damage or cracked screens. RIM said users should be sure to wipe the devices of all personal information, as working BlackBerrys may be sent to resellers.

It's a solid offensive tactic for RIM to deploy in order to maintain subscriber numbers, one that will complement their direct support offering for PlayBook owners.
