Techvibes TV at GROW 2011: HootSuite's Ryan Holmes

by Knowlton Thomas

It been one week since the GROW 2011 Conference took over Vancouver. The city was abuzz as Canada's smartest entrepreneurs descended on the city along with venture capitalists from across Canada and south of the border.

Techvibes was there, myself live-blogging all the sessions and Michelle Sklar conducting lobby interviews for Techvibes TV. Throughout the day Techvibes recorded 30+ interviews with both event speakers and select Canadian entrepreneurs.

Below is an interview with Ryan Holmes, whose session was titled "Border Patrol: Why it Does (or Doesn't Matter) Where a Startup Plants its Roots." In it, the Vancouver entrepreneur told the crowd why his company HootSuite chose to remain in Vancouver to many cheers from enthusiastic locals.

Invoker Media founder and HootSuite CEO Ryan Holmes’ entrepreneurial endeavors include successes in a variety of industries, from founding a pizza restaurant chain to building the top online paintball equipment supplier.

His interest in tech emerged early after winning an Apple II in an elementary school programming contest. Ryan founded digital agency Invoke Media in 2000 to provide holistic marketing, development and design services. Invoke also developed products including early CMS and e-commerce web apps, the Memelabs contesting platform, and then social media dashboard HootSuite. Rapid growth led to spin-out and funding of HootSuite in December 2009.
