The most popular type of mobile app in Canada? Weather

Canadians are weather-obsessed—perhaps because, unlike say California, our weather changes often. As in, every five seconds.

We love making idle chit chat to both strangers and familial folks alike, as though saying "It's cold out today" actually informs the other party of something they didn't already know. Or saying "Hopefully the rain stops soon" actually adds value to the conversation. Or that laughing about peculiar weather patterns is actually remotely interesting.

So it's no surprise that an Ipsos Reid survey on Canadian mobile usage revealed that weather apps top the list of most popular downloads.

But what is Canada's favourite app? The Weather Network, with 40 percent of smartphone users and 35 percent of tablet users with weather apps using this one. (I use it too.)

The Weather Network has seen nearly 20 million app downloads in Canada and has a superb track record of launching apps on new platforms quickly. WeatherEye was one of the first Canadian apps available on both the iPad and PlayBook—and we're not just talking weather apps here.

What's your favourite weather app?
