The Internet in 2015

As ubiquitous as the internet seems now, it still has a long way to go, according to Cisco's fifth annual Visual Networking Index Forecast.

The report suggests that global internet traffic will quadruple by the year 2015, and that there will be 15 billion gadgets linked to the internet.

A staggering three billion people, or over 40 percent of the planet's population, will be using the by the year 2015.

Online video traffic will be 14 times greater compared to last year.

This will lead to one million minutes of video traversing the internet each and every second.

And mobile data traffic growth will accelerate even faster, increasing by a magnitude of 26 times.

Currently, personal computers account for 97 percent of consumer internet traffic, but this number will drop to 87 percent by the year 2015 as smartphones, tablets, and web-enabled TVs continue their ascension to mainstream popularity.

"The explosive growth in Internet data traffic, especially video, creates an opportunity in the years ahead for optimizing and monetizing visual, virtual and mobile Internet experiences," said Cisco vice president Suraj Shetty.
