There's Two Gorillas Eating Everyone Else (But Not Each Other) in the Smartphone Space
Marketshare. No matter how big a market is, there's only ever going to be 100% of it.
With that in mind, Vancouver startup Mobify crunched some numbers on who is gaining marketshare—and who's losing it as a result. Dubbing Apple's iPhone and Google's Android as the "two 800-pound gorillas," Mobify revealed that while Android is gaining marketshare faster, it's not eating any of Apple's.
Rather, both gorillas are still gleefully devouring the marketshare of "second-tier players." For example, from March to November—a period of just 6 months—BlackBerry lost a staggering 66% of its share. Meanwhile, Android gained 13% marketshare and the iPhone gained 1%. Samsung and Windows legacy devices lost massive marketshare too, further paving way for Apple and Google.
In terms of mobile web traffic, iOS and Android combine for more than 80% of all visits. Again, this occurs at the greatest cost to RIM. An originator of the mobile web, BlackBerry now accounts for less than 3% of that space.
