The Difference Engine Initiative is a new Toronto-based program that is designed to encourage the work of game developers from minority groups. It will be holding two free incubators for female developers in the coming months.

The incubators will consist of six participants and they will develop a game over six three-hour hands-on sessions.

Females are the first target in a bid to foster diversity in the game dev space, with age and races to be looked at in the future. Metanet co-founder Mare Sheppard has said that "more diversity makes better games" and a diverse crowd of game makers would "make our industry a lot cooler."

Applications for the two incubators are being taken through July 31. One runs August to September and one runs October to November.
