Toronto Start-up Index - January 2008

Posted by Greg Andrews on Tue, January 15, 2008 3:03 PM · Filed under Toronto, Waterloo , Start-up Index · 16 Comments

This second edition of the Toronto Start-up Index gets more interesting as we get to see some movement through the standings. The index ranks Toronto area start-ups based on an average of Alexa and Compete traffic rankings. Criteria and other details are available on the Start-up Index page.

Two new additions made the top ten: iBegin at #3 and Carpages at #9.

If you have any suggestions for companies to add to the index, please post them in the comments for this post.

Might I suggest for Alexa using the Canadian ranking - eg while we are above ZipLocal overall, in the Canadian ranking they are 700 ahead of us.

AhmedF said on Tue, January 15, 2008 at 11:05 PM

Or actually a bit of both. Eg ZipLocal gets especially hit because they only focus on Canada - hitting them hard across the rest.

Maybe factor in both Alexas - overall and Canadian?

I don't think the list should be "influence in Canada" so much as success of the company. Obviously I'm biased since the vast majoriy of our traffic is US and International, but either way.

Happy to even be *on* this list, so thanks guys!

Oh my goodness: Greg really needs to do his homework! How could you have not listed the greatest Toronto startup: Idee Inc. oh oh. Check it out: http://www.ideeinc.com

We would rank in the top 10 I believe. Off to doing your homework. Now.

This is really, really biased to startups that are based on web page views. Where's the enterprise software startups? The mobile phone software startups?

A lot of the companies on the Fast 50 are still startups, but I see few of them here.

You need more adjectives between "Toronto area" and "startups".

Great list!

What's the criteria for getting listed on it? We're definitely Toronto-based, almost certainly a startup, and would rank somewhere in the middle of the list from a traffic perspective. Contact me directly if you need more info...

Leila: Idee isn't included because it is older than five years, one of the criteria we defined for "start-up". Please correct me if I'm wrong.

We certainly don't mean to shun other types of companies, and would like to do other lists in the future.

Carpages has the wrong URL - it's www.carpages.ca, NOT www.carpages.com.

omeone mentioned parkingspots.com and while it's run out of toronto, technically it's active NorthAm wide. Just launched though so stay tuned!

Carads.ca is a Mississauga based startup with a decent ranking on Google.ca for used cars, used cars for sale, used car prices, toronto etc. keywords.
