SoJo Wants to Cultivate Socially Conscious Companies
If you're into Canada's tech scene, you've probably heard of Kunal Gupta. He's the young entrepreneur behind Polar Mobile, an explosively successful mobile app development startup in Toronto with big-name clients around the globe. But you probably haven't heard of his sister, Kanika.
Until now. Kanika is an entrepreneur as well and she's recently founded her first tech startup, SoJo Ventures. Calgary-based SoJo is a digital media initiative focused on providing young people with the tools and resources they require to launch socially conscious companies. SoJo is shorthand for "social journal."
Quoth the Financial Post:
“He [Kunal] is the one that actually encouraged me to take this out of a book and put it into technology; a world that is very new to me,” Ms. Gupta explained, referring to the Masters thesis she recently completed on youth social entrepreneurship for the University of Victoria in British Columbia. “Just having him as a support has been incredible because he has exposed me to so many possibilities I otherwise perhaps would not have thought of.”
“We come from a family of entrepreneurs and business people so we grew up around an environment that was very encouraging,” Mr. Gupta said. “We both took leadership roles from a very young age and we still learn a lot from each other. We challenge each other and we also motivate each other…constantly.”
Kanika has spent her career this far in the nonprofit sector, making SoJo her first for-profit endeavour. SoJo is currently in beta.
