Toronto's Backyard.it expands to more than 100 communities across Canada

Founded in December 2009 by Daniel Maloney, "Canada's most passionate young entrepreneur," Backyard.it consolidates a variety of local news sources to provide you with a real-time snapshot of communities across Canada.

Previously available to 33 communities in Ontario, the Toronto-based startup has expanded across the country, covering Vancouver, Winnipeg, Moncton, Halifax, Montreal, Regina, Yellowknife, and dozens more. Each community has its own subdomain featuring local photography, weather, and news.

"I'm a news junkie," confesses Daniel Maloney. "I don't really want to miss an event or interesting story because it slipped by my radar, but I can't really commit an hour combing the web to see what's up in my town. Backyard provides an at-a-glance view into what's going on, that's easy to navigate and consume, and requires really little commitment. We stretch beyond news and pull in content from other web services like Twitter, Flickr, Kijiji, Craigslist, etc. In July we're going to start indexing daily deals sites like Living Social, Groupon and WagJag. We're a living, breathing version of a local portal from web 1.0, but instead of links, it's purely content."

Backyard.it currently consist of Daniel and two developers.
