On Friday afternoon the Toronto Transit Commission went mobile. (Insert transit joke here.)

Both the TTC's website and Trip Planner received the mobile "upgrade".  The trip planner has actually been in beta testing since earlier this year.  The mobilized version of the trip planner gives users the ability to plan a route to their destination.

The mobilized version of www.ttc.ca features the trip planner, schedules, fare information, and other relevant TTC customer information, such as service alerts.

You can access the mobile sites at m.ttc.ca, mobile.ttc.ca and mymobile.ttc.ca.

The TTC also announced a few other tech initiatives yesterday.

  • Later this year, customers will be able to filter the types of e-alerts they receive by selecting subway lines, bus and streetcar routes specific to their needs.
  • Also, the choice of receiving advisories by SMS or email will be available.
  • By the end of the year, the TTC will also begin work allowing third parties to build applications using TTC data that will be available to the public free of charge.

These three planned initiatives, along with the TTC's new mobile strategy, is a welcomed change to many Torontonians.  The work on open data will also be welcomed news for many Toronto-based app developers looking to apply their expertise in making Canada's largest municipal transit service even more rider and tech friendly.
