Twitter to Nokia: 'You Make Too Many Products'

Today Nokia announced two Windows Phone devices, the Lumia 710 and 800, as well as three versions of Asha, a budget device for developing markets. These 5 are, of course, in addition to Nokia's myriad other gadgets sitting on shelves collecting dust. For all the phones it has, why is its marketshare diminishing?

Twitter and Square founder Jack Dorsey tweeted some advice to the struggling giant: “you make too many products. Focus on 3.”

Apple is the classic example of success with minimal selection, particularly in the mobile space. It essentially has just one device—the iPhone—with the newest generation being it's high-end model and its previous generation being the more budget-oriented option for consumers.

Nokia wouldn't be able to get away with that scarce of a smartphone roster, but it would certainly be a burden off their backs to stop trying to tap into every demographic in the world. But at least for Nokia, it isn't alone: RIM has the same quantity over quality problem.

In the words of Steve Jobs, "Focys is about saying 'no.'"
