University of Ottawa opens state-of-the-art teleconference room
The University of Ottawa inaugurated a new state-of-the-art “immersive telepresence room,” today.
The new room uses a 16-foot high-definition video wall to create the illusion that conference participants are all in the same room.

The system uses technology from Polycom, a Pleasanton, California-based communications technology firm.
With seating for 12, the conference room, part of uOttawa’s Centre for Mediated Teaching a Learning, is acoustically treated for sound quality and features studio lighting.
“This new virtual learning environment should allow the University of Ottawa to embrace environmental sustainability goals through the reduction of travel, while extending the reach of university experts and attracting new students,” said Alain Erdmer, director of the University of Ottawa Centre for Mediated Teaching and Learning in a press release.
According to the university’s press release, the room be available to everyone at the university and can be used for, among other things, thesis defences, research meetings and distance education.
Having a high-tech conferencing room on campus also allows students to become familiar with the technology.
