Vancouver chosen as open beta locale for new dating app by AppSocial

If one is, indeed, the loneliest number, then it’s a good thing that any ones with an iPhone can download the new Tingle app, and meet other ones just like them.

Tingle, a product of Vancouver-based AppSocial, call itself “a revolution in online dating that puts thousands of singles at your fingertips.” Using location-based check-in features, Tingle finds singles near you and allows you to communicate with them over messaging, email, and even voice conversations without giving out your name or personal information. And, to top it off, this communication is all free.

In designing Tingle, AppSocial looked to solve a few problems that plague the larger dating websites; namely, lower involvement from women and spamming. To enhance the app’s appeal to the fairer sex, AppSocial canvassed more than 350 women in-depth in designing the service to get their perspectives. Spam blockers were added to the service, which AppSocial founder Ian Andrew Bell said was key for the mobile app, saying, “[We] don’t want to be constantly chirping and beeping in users’ pockets and purses.”

To get this new app and service going, Vancouver has been selected as the first city to try it out in open beta. AppSocial chose Van City for their open beta because of the large single population and their urban nature, which is conducive to Tingle’s location-based features. You can download the beta here.

After being named to Techvibes' Top 10 Digital Media People to Watch in BC in 2010 list, Bell spent 2010 staffing up, doing contract work for "another social network" and building Tingle.

Along the way AppSocial was named as one of the top 10 global start-ups by Global Entrepreneurship Week and finished in the top 10 in the 2010 BCIC New Ventures Competition.
