With yesterday's launch of the Cannes Film Festivalit should come as no surprise that there was an accompanying launch of an iPhone application.  The world's most famous film fest, like Vancouver's Olympics, the upcoming FIFA World Cup and pretty much any large scale event, is going digital and it's companion iPhone application was developed by Vancouver's Xomo Digital Inc.

Xomo, whose clients have included the 2010 Winter Olympic Games, the London Jazz Festival, the Vancouver International Jazz Festival and the Vancouver International Film Festival, is an industry leader in mobile event guides.  Like Cannes the application is both French and English, and its feature set includes:

- GPS: Find out what's on near you during the Festival on your iPhone
- Maps: Embedded Google maps and links to turn-by-turn directions to venues
- Venue details: including photo, address and description for all the cinemas and Festival locations
- Listing of events at Marché du Film, the busiest movie market of the world
- Complete listing of screenings for films ‘In Competition’ as well as those in Un Certain Regard, Out of Competition, Special Screenings, Cinéfondation, Short Films, Cannes Classics, Tous les Cinémas du Monde, Caméra d'Or, Cinéma de la Plage, Directors' Fortnight and International Critics' Week.
- Read film descriptions and watch trailers
- Build your personalized 'Favourites' list
- Watch daily festival highlight videos
- Read blog posts from the red carpet
- See photos and contribute your own right from your iPhone
- Facebook and Twitter integration

Festival de CannesWhile Xomo neglected to fly reviewers and journalists out to the south of France to test the location aware component of the application, it's easy to follow what's going on at the festival through the application.  From schedualing events to following a stream of photographs and Twitter Tweets, users can feel like they're rubbing shoulders with the rich and beautiful even if they're looking out onto a half empty parking lot in Surrey.  For those lucky, rich or famous enough to actually be in Cannes the application provides the opportunity to share their photos with other users in real-time.

Visually the application is very similiar to their Official 2010 Olympic Games Mobile Spectator Guide which helped more than a million users in fifty-six different countriesfollow Vancouver's games.  Users of the Olympics app will also recognize the ability to favorite certain events along with a number of other features that have transferred over.

The application is currently free from the iTunes App store.
