Vancouver Start-up Index - May 2008

Posted by Greg Andrews on Thu, May 15, 2008 12:33 PM · Filed under Vancouver , Start-up Index · 10 Comments

The index ranks Vancouver area tech start-ups based on an average of Alexa and Compete traffic rankings. Criteria and other details are available on the Start-up Index page. This month, there may be some large shifts due to an overhaul of Alexa’s traffic sources.

If you have any suggestions for companies to add to the index, please post them in the comments for this post.

I'm still of the opinion that Compete scores are pretty worthless unless you're only measuring US traffic. Their ranking number is only based on US visitor counts, not overall.

Have you guys looked into including Quantcast scores? They're up there with Alexa and better than Compete.

Hate to disagree with Nick (an old co-worker), but for many of us, the U.S. is a huge source of business, making the compete.com scores particularly relevant.

Thanks for the index, guys. It has no reflection on revenue, obviously, but we know we're doing a good job on our digital marketing when our ranking is going up, not down. It's fun to follow.

yes, I agree with Chri

This is good, thanks guys, appreciate it.

It took years to get www.metrolyrics.com on techvivbes' index, but only two months to drop altogether. Just for a reference it is younger than 5 years, and techvibes' composite index should be 449, which would put it on the #1 spot.

Hey, we'd love to have Sillysoft Games (sillysoft.net) included in the chart.

Chris, my point was that creating a combined ranking from Alexa and Compete is just bad data. It's comparing apples and oranges. Alexa counts all international traffic whereas Compete is only using US stats.

I'm not saying that Compete isn't relevant to your business, as obviously US data is valuable, but putting the two together doesn't add up to anything worth tracking.

@Alan: It was suggested to us that Metrolyrics was older, and it seemed they were right given Internet Archive pages that go back to 2002, and copyright notices that said as early as 2000. Thanks for the clarification, we've put Metrolyrics back on the list.

@Alan, it took you years to get on this list? Its only been running since January of this year.

And Archive.org has content from your site all the way back to 2002?

Following the Techvibes' status clarification, metrolyrics.com would be less than 5 years old as it became MetroLeap Media Inc.'s property in October 2004.

I don't mean to be rude or anything but I'm wondering what a site like babe vs babe makes in terms of revenue, given they are pretty much purely ad based. I just can't see how ad based sites make money, but perhaps I'm wrong as I see a ton of them out there (most don't last very long however which also makes me wonder)
