VeloCity aims to incubate at Waterloo

Posted by Warren Frey on Sat, March 8, 2008 7:14 PM · Filed under Kitchener-Waterloo , Venture Capital, Web 2.0, Start-up · 1 Comment

The University of Waterloo is turning one of its residences into a de facto incubator focused on mobile and media startups this fall. The Minota Hagey residence will house 70 Waterloo students who will not only live together but also collaborate to create new and innovative ideas with commercial potential. The residence is being renovated over the summer to create a presentation space, a meeting room and a media and mobile device lab, as well as upgrading existing technologies to better recreate a startup environment for the students. Will it succeed? Startup North has some thoughts.

I have been in the Velocity program since it launched in September, and so far its been great. It remains to be seen what web and mobile products will come out of the incubator but the people and energy here have been amazing. There is so much drive and ambition here, every university should have something similar.
