Is Victoria, BC becoming a gaming hotbed?

Earlier this month Microsoft announced that they are opening a new game studio early 2012 and today another Seattle-headquartered tech giant annouced that they are expanding in BC's capital city.

GameHouse, the gaming division of RealNetworks, announced this morning that the company is expanding its social game studio to a new office in Victoria, where it aims to double its staff to at least 45 people by the end of 2012.

Techvibes readers will recall that RealNetworks acquired Victoria's Backstage Technologies in 2010 which became GameHouse Canada.

“Social game development is the number one priority for our company in 2012 and the expansion in Victoria was chosen for the city’s high caliber of talent combined with a great quality of life.” said Matt Hulett, chief gamer at GameHouse. “I believe this strategic expansion of our social games studio in Victoria will not only multiply our games portfolio, but it will also solidify our leadership position in the overall games industry.”

According to Hulett GameHouse has invested over $10 million in social gaming initiatives in 2011 and revenues are growing at triple-digit rates.

The new downtown studio will specialize in creating games on Facebook, Google+, and other emerging social platforms. It will be located at  712 Yates and opens on January 16, 2012.
