Victoria-based Carmanah Technologies Corporation has been awarded a $1.1 million contract from the U.S. Coast Guard to provide 2,500 solar-powered LED lamps to the service.

The contract for Carmanah’s M700 series solar LED marine lanterns is the continuation of a long-running relationship between the Coast Guard and Carmanah. The Coast Guard gave Carmanah its first contract over a decade ago, and were in fact Carmanah’s first customer.

The lamps will be used for navigation and emergency purposes in 25 coastal states. They are solar-powered and extremely visible, and Carmanah describes them as “Self-powered, self-contained and virtually indestructible, ... and will operate maintenance-free for years.” The lamps are used on boats and for permanent navigation aids.

Carmanah also announced that they have received an offer from the Canadian Coast Guard to provide LED lamps. No further details have been announced.
