What are your favourite stories on The Onion?
Writing today’s article about The Onion gave me the unusual pleasure of combing through my favourite website of all time to find material to write about. Of course, distraction set in, and I probably did much more combing than necessary to write the article.
Which brings me to my point: what are your favourite pieces on The Onion? If you’re like me, you’ve been reading it for years, maybe even before The Onion was known popularly for their videos (I know, I know, I’m being elitist here). I posted a link in my earlier article about one of my particular favourites (“Everyone Involved In Pizza's Preparation, Delivery, Purchase Extremely High”), but here are a few of my other top picks:
- Lovecraftian School Board Member Wants Madness Added To Curriculum: Anyone with a love for fantasy or sci-fi will probably get a kick out of this one. Excerpt: "Charles sure likes to bang on that madness drum," fellow school board member Danielle Kolker said. "I'm not totally sold on his plan to let gibbering, half-formed creatures dripping with ichor feed off the flesh and fear of our students. But he is always on time to help set up for our spaghetti suppers, and his bake sale goods are among the most popular."
- Point-Counterpoint: Maple Syrup Is An Excellent Way To Enhance The Flavor Of Pancakes And Waffles vs. I Thought We Were Going To Talk About The Proliferation Of Nuclear Weapons: I love juxtaposition of the incongruous. I also love the way this article juxtaposes two styles of opinion writing we’ve all known for so long: the clichéd, down-home, folksy wisdom of the man who loves pancakes, and the well-researched, authoritative voice of the expert on global affairs. The combination is just perfect.
- Evil Red Wings Owner Wario Lemieux Steals Stanley Cup: Just a silly little Photoshop, but it made me feel better after watching those damn Red Wings beat the Penguins for the Stanley Cup in ‘09.
- Newsroom: Nation's Girlfriends Unveil New Economic Plan: 'Let's Move In Together:' The passive-aggressive arguing is brilliant, especially when the anchorperson jumps in on the girlfriends’ side.
I know a lot of Techvibes readers are fans of The Onion, so let’s hear which ones gave you a larf. Post links to your favourite stories in the comments section!
