Wind claims it is now the fastest growing wireless carrier in Canada. Can this be true?
Wind Mobile has been operating for over a year and is now claiming that it is "officially the fastest growing wireless carrier in Canada." It notes that the incumbents have reported their first-quarter results and says the figures show that Wind has added more new subscribers than any other provider.
"These numbers prove what we at Wind already knew—Canadians are tired of paying sky-high prices and want a real wireless alternative," said Anthony Lacavera, Chairman of Globalive Communications and WIND Mobile. "It is proof that wireless competition has been long overdue and Canadians are sending a clear signal that they have opted for WIND because of a true value for dollar offering and a positive customer service experience."
Wind claims that by adding 39,000 new subscribers in Q1, it claimed 30 per cent of the subscriber growth in the quarter nationally—and says if that growth is adjusted for the size of WIND's coverage areas, its share was over 50 percent.
"The results are clear. The market is shifting. WIND is proving to be the competitive alternative for Canadians," said Ken Campbell, CEO of Wind. "Our message of value and customer service is resonating with consumers and attracting them at an accelerating rate."
Whether Wind is the fastest growing is debatable. Numbers don't lie, but they can certainly be manipulated. And rate of growth only means so much when you're talking about 300,000 total subscribers versus several million. Still, it's hard to argue that Wind is proving to be the most formidable of the wireless startups.
