WIND Mobile Blows Into Vancouver

More competition for the mobile phone service providers in Vancouver is a reality as WIND Mobile moves into the west coast. Looking to build market share, they've got an offer now to join WIND before June 30th, 2010 and get 6 months of plan fees-free (conditions apply).

Anthony Lacavera, Chairman of WIND Mobile takes an amusing historic view of what is otherwise a pretty standard type of expansion of a commodity service into an established market:

In 1871 British Columbia became the sixth Canadian province. In order to convince BC to join Confederation, Canada’s first Prime Minister Sir John A. MacDonald promised to construct a transcontinental railroad...The completed railroad, with its Canada Post mail car and telegraph system, would greatly facilitate communication across Canada.

Today, the ways in which Canadians talk with each other has vastly changed, yet the need to converse is just as great. This is why I am excited to launch WIND Mobile in Vancouver. We’ve come a long way since 1886 – back then it took almost seven days for a mail car to get from Toronto to Vancouver, now a WIND smartphone can send emails the same distance almost instantly!

Well, this is all true. Though I've been able to send emails across Canada since long before WIND showed up. The story here is more about new competition on the scene which could mean cheaper rates for all customers, whatever brand they're using. Not really akin to a telecommunication revolution. But I do like saving money.
