University of Waterloo Unveils Winter 2014 Cohort of Startups for Velocity Garage

There are 35 new startups at the University of Waterloo's Velocity Garage workspace in downtown Kitchener for the winter 2014 term.

“Demand for Velocity workspace continues to grow each year and we’re doing what we can to accommodate all of the great innovations and young entrepreneurs coming from the University of Waterloo,” explains Mike Kirkup, Velocity director. “We’re off to an amazing start this year, with a record 35 startups headquartered at Velocity Garage this term.”

The new companies for the Winter 2014 term include:

Sesame IO, a free online platform that lets Kindergarten to Grade 12 teachers connect all of the everyday notable moments to make each student's learning process visible. Founder is Ian Tao, Mechatronics Engineering 2013, University of Waterloo.

Velatron Labs, which is developing a personalized platform to help shoppers order the right-sized clothing online. Founders Piyush Kumar, Rohit Verma and Pratik Patel, Mechanical Engineering 2013, are Waterloo alumni.

Homefed, an online food network that matches hosts and guests to share home-cooked meals. Founders are Steven Wang, Master of Business, Entrepreneurship and Technology (MBET) 2013, University of Waterloo, James Mclean, Industrial Design 2003, OCADU, and Vishnu Varadaraj, MBET 2011, University of Waterloo.

MetricWire, which provides researchers with a platform for collecting high-frequency data from study participants and their environments via smartphones. MetricWire won a grant worth $25,000 at the Velocity Fund Finals last November. Founders are Brian Stewart, Master of Arts 2013, economics specializing in econometrics; George Wang, Bachelor of Applied Science 2012 in mechatronics; Charles Desouza, third-year systems design engineering, all from the University of Waterloo.
