A few months ago Ottawa-based Zip.ca shipped its 10 millionth DVD. Quite an accomplishment for the four-year-old start-up that's been dubbed the Canadian equivalent of online video rental behemoth Netflix. Today on itbusiness.ca, Nestor E. Arellano takes a close look at Zip.ca and the movie-picking technology that keeps customers renting. Zip.ca's online ordering system is powered by a "recommendation algorithm" that helps customers decide which movie to watch. Based on a member's profile and a list of previously rented titles, the system provides the customer a list of other movies that might appeal to his or her tastes. It's a powerful marketing tool as it personalizes the movie selection experience for the customer, while giving Zip.ca numerous up-sell opportunities. Zip.ca's inventory exceeds 72,000 individual titles and 250,000 discs which it rents out to more than 35,000 members Canada-wide. Zip.ca is owned by Momentous.ca - a veteran domain name industry company that operates domain name aftermarket Pool.com and a handful of other domain name registrars.

When I looked into it I couldn't find a single person who spoke positively about zip.ca. Has this changed?

Most people who have positive experiences never write about them. I've only seen a handfull of complaints, so it can't be all that bad.
I've been using it for over a year now and, other than a few issues that were dealt with, it's worked very well for me.
Are you kidding??? Yes it's our best online DVD company, but it dosn't mean it's good. Actually if you compare it to netflix (our US conterpart) it's pretty lame. For the whole time I was a member, I rarelly received the dvd that was on the top of my list. For most of the time I received dvd that were in the 30 to 40 place.
On top of that the delivery speed is very what Zip is lacking of. At that speed I can almost wait for the movie to come on TV.
Exemple, with Netflix I used to received my DVD within 2 or 3 days after I mailed my return dvd. With Zip i often wait for almost 10 to 15 days. There is even in one occasion where I received my DVD 3 weeks after I had return my selection.
This maybe the best we have in Canada but it can't be compare to Netflix...
Suggestion: DVDLink.ca
used zip for 2 years until i found out about another great site DVDLink.ca
This site is mix of zip(for movies) and gameaccess(for games). DVDLink.ca is only site in Canada to offer movies and games for one price. Great selection, price and customer service
o far there hasn't been a single incident where I’ve received movies from the bottom of my list. Everything is coming from top 5. Give these guys a try before turning back to local video stores.
