Nokia Canada

Nokia Canada

Nokia Canada has operated since the 1970s. During this time, Nokia has transformed itself from an industrial conglomerate to a focussed telecommunications company. Due to its cutting-edge technology and successful marketing, Nokia has risen to become a leading player in the global telecommunications industry.

Nokia''s history in the Canadian wireless community stretches back a number of years. In 1995, Nokia and the University of Sherbrooke in Quebec jointly developed the EFR Voice Codec, a major advancement in voice sound quality. It is now the industry standard for GSM 1900, GSM 900 (Europe and Asia) and TDMA systems.
Nokia’s first mobile phone in Canada was the Nokia Talkman, sold to Cantel (today Rogers AT&T Wireless). Today, Canada is primarily NMP (Ajax, Vancouver) and NIC (Kanata). NET, based in Ajax, regularly introduces products and services to the Canadian market.

Today, Nokia Canada has three locations:

Ajax, Ontario (NMP & NET)
Opened in July 2001, the new 80,000 sq. ft. facility serves as Nokia’s Canadian headquarters
· Provides Canadian warehousing and distribution, technical service and support, as well as sales and marketing for all Nokia mobile phone products sold in Canada
· Plans to introduce NET products in very near future
· Employs more than 175 personnel.

Kanata, Ontario (NIC)
· Joined Nokia in 1998 through the acquisition of Kanata-based Vienna Systems (to strengthen Nokia’s presence in IP Telephony)
· Today, the Kanata facility is focussed on channel marketing, customer service administration and technical assistance for Nokia Internet Communications initiatives
· Technical Assistance Centre (TAC) largest group on-site; fields 80% of all technical support calls globally for NIC

Vancouver, British Columbia (NMP)
· Product creation and business development centre, which is responsible for designing next-generation wireless devices and services and is the only mobile terminal R&D facility in Canada
