The Early Beginnings
It all started with the dream of producing a cross-platform, massively multiplayer game way back in 1996. We hired the CRIM to research existing technologies to produce such a game within a reasonable budget. In the end, we found that the available technology (read client/server database-driven) provided slow interaction and was expensive to operate. Not satisfied with what was available on the market, we decided to scrap the game idea and focus on solving technology-related problems.

Starting Up
In March 1998, after receiving initial funding, we set up offices in Old Montréal. It took two years to fully develop an object-centric networking architecture optimized for gaming applications. We really dug deep into our distributed objects expertise to develop a radically different networking middleware. Our first product, Net-Z, was launched at the Game Developer Conference in 2000 and was a huge success.

Pionnering Online Multiplayer Middleware
Late in 2000, we were approved by Sony to develop for the PlayStation 2 and we showcased our first PS2 beta during GDC 2001. In addition, we had a few upcoming titles that used Net-Z which were also showcased at this time. Later that year, we announced that we were the first networking middleware vendor to be approved by Microsoft for the Xbox and we were proud to be included in the select group of launch partners. Soon after, we released Quazal Eterna, an infrastructure designed to accelerate the development of massively multiplayer games. Then, a few months later, we announced an agreement with Nintendo to provide Net-Z and Eterna for the GameCube. Eterna was the first MMOG infrastructure available for the GameCube.
