Vitrium Systems is a privately-held computer software company based in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Vitrium was officially founded, in the summer of 2005, with the goal of creating a revolutionary new standard in electronic document software.

In 2005 Vitrium released protectedpdf, a Digital Rights Management (DRM) solution for PDFs which offers: an effective deterrent against most instances of content piracy and misuse, a seamless way for authorized readers to access content, with no extra downloads, a range of deployment options that balances the needs for flexibility and usability, and affective DRM for PDF content.

Protectedpdf empowers companies that distribute e-books, research reports, textbooks and other PDF documents to prevent most instances of: piracy and unauthorized sharing of valuable content, and misuse of sensitive or confidential materials.

Protectedpdf provides a full range of customizable DRM features including the ability to: dynamically define, modify and revoke reader access permissions, limit the number of computers a reader may access content on, control the ability of readers to print documents, and seamless access for authorized readers

Protectedpdf enables content publishers to transform their standard PDFs into secure protectedpdf documents. Just like regular PDFs, these documents can be accessed with Adobe Reader, the free PDF viewer that comes pre-installed on most PCs without the need for any plug-ins, third-party viewers or other downloads.

In 2008 Vitrium released docmetrics, a web-based application that allows organizations to enhance their standard PDF files (white papers, data sheets and other electronic documents), creating dynamic docmetrics documents which – unlike standard PDFs – are able to include: in-document forms that provide data on who reads content, document analytics technology that measures how readers read content, and in-document forms.

Docmetrics allows users to embed forms in documents to gather reader data, including: demographic information (name, contact details etc), qualifying details (occupation, business needs etc), and
responses to questions (reactions to content etc).

The docmetrics system provides more comprehensive and valuable reader data than conventional web registration forms. With in-document forms organizations can: collect information on “pass along” readers who receive content from colleagues, distribute forms and surveys throughout documents, to gather real-time reader feedback and lead qualifying data, all without impacting the reader experience.
