Western Economic Diversification

Western Economic Diversification

A Department of the Government of Canada, Western Economic Diversification Canada (WD) was established in 1987 under the provision of the Western Economic Diversification Act. WD works to strengthen Western Canada's economy and advance the interests of the West in national economic policy.

Our programs and services support three strategic directions: Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Sustainable Communities. We support the Western Canada Business Service Network, which offers over 100 points of service across the West. Our Business Service Network database can assist you with locating the network offices nearest you.

We promote the development and diversification of the economy of Western Canada and advance the interests of the West in national economic policy.

We support the development and growth of a western Canadian economy that is inclusive, innovative, sustainable and diversified.

A stronger West. A stronger Canada

We are committed to meeting the standards of the Government of Canada Public Service Values and Ethics Code. Our Values and Ethics Statement makes explicit the core values and ethics which guide us as public servants in our professional activities.

WD administers programs and services that advance innovation, entrepreneurship and sustainable communities. In all our activities we use innovative partnerships with public and private sectors, other levels of government, academic and financial institutions, and research centres to make the most of our investment in Western Canada.

WD's "core" funding is allotted by Parliament under the Western Diversification Program, while "non core" funding represents Government of Canada funds delivered by WD in support of national initiatives.
