ComScore's Top Startups in Canada - September 2008

As a follow-up to our September Canada Start-Up Index yesterday, we've arranged with comScore to get some real data behind what our numbers mean. While we agree that Alexa and Compete (and our Techvibes Traffic Rank) numbers are not an accurate measurement of website traffic, they are a great way to compare the traffic of multiple online properties as it creates a level playing field for metrics.

In the above chart, the Online % Reach is the percentage of Canadians online that each entity reaches. As an example, Metrolyrics.com reached 8.5% of all Canadians during July 2008, making them the hands-down leader.  Side note - since last months comparison Nexopia has grown their lead on Plentyoffish increasing .4 while POF dropped .2.

Changes to the Techvibes Startup Indexes

September's startup indexes have been published and you'll notice a couple changes in the format.

Rather than displaying multiple columns with Alexa.com, Compete.com, and average rankings, we've simplified the layout with just the Techvibes Traffic Rank (TTR) displayed. The TTR is currently an average of Alexa and Compete's data however we will include other valubale data into the calculation in the future.

For those of you that miss seeing the Alexa and Compete rankings on one page - don't worry, they're still there. Just hover over the name or the rank of the startup in question and you'll see a tooltip with the startup's logo, url, and ranking summary.

Changes to the Start-Up Indexes

Now that we've launched the new Techvibes site, we're making a couple of changes to the Techvibes Start-Up Indexes that will go into effect on September 1st. Have a read:

Publish date: The indexes will now all be published in the 1st of the month based on data from the last day of the previous month.

Cities versus Regions: We'll publish city-specific indexes for all the cities that we're currently covering. So, say Goodbye to the Alberta index and Hello to seperate indexes for Calgary and Edmonton. As a result, we'll be adding a Seattle Start-Up Index to the mix on September 1st as well.

Getting on the Index: Commenting on a previous start-up index blog post will be longer be sufficient. If you want to be included in a start-up index, follow these two simple steps: 1) add your company to our directory and 2) send us an email letting us know that you'd like to be considered. A little more formal, but still super-easy.

Techvibes Traffic Rank: We'll continue using traffic ranking data from both Alexa and Compete (and other services that make sense in the future) but will publish only one number in the index, our hybrid Techvibes Traffic Rank.

Look out for the September Start-Up Indexes on Monday, Septmeber 1st and be sure to follow steps 1 & 2 above before 11:59pm on August 31st.

ComScore’s Top Start-ups in Canada - August 2008

In the attached chart, the Online % Reach is the percentage of Canadians online that each entity reaches. As an example, Metrolyrics.com reached 8.2% of all Canadians aged 2+ online during the month of June 2008, making them the hands-down leader. Thanks to our new Start-Up Index criteria, we've got a battle brewing between #1 MetroLyrics vs. #2 Plentyoffish. However, comSore numbers reveal a third contender. Nexopia, which ranks #15 on our Canadian Start-up Index, cuts in line in front of everyone and grabs the #2 spot on the comScore list just ahead of Plentyoffish with a reach of 5.6%. Canada Start-up Index - August 2008

Canada Start-up IndexThe index ranks Canada tech start-ups based on an average of Alexa and Compete traffic rankings. City lists and other details are available on the Start-up Index page. The criteria for companies to appear on the list:

  • Located in Canada
  • Not a public company
  • Is a tech company; either hardware, software, web app/service, or mobile

The Index is intended as a jovial comparison of Canadian companies. Comprehensive traffic data is difficult to obtain, and neither Alexa or Compete’s numbers are perfect; we average them to smooth out bias. Further, web traffic isn't necessarily a relevant measure of success, nor is it even an indication of having a practical business model. If you have any suggestions for companies to add to the index, please post them in the comments for this post.

ComScore's Top Start-ups in Canada

Everytime we publish our monthly Techvibes Start-Up Indexes, there are always a few complaints about the use of Alexa and Compete data for ranking the websites of start-ups. While we agree that it's not an accurate measurement of website traffic, it is a great way to compare the traffic of different online properties as it creates a level playing field for metrics. Our inaugural Canadian Start-Up Index on July 1st received the usual anti-Alexa comments, so we decided to consult with a recognized Internet information provider - comScore - to see how the top websites on our Canadian Index measure up. In the attached chart, the Online % Reach is the percentage of Canadians online that each entity reaches. As an example, Metrolyrics.com reached 7.7% of all Canadians aged 2+ online during the month of May 2008, making them the hands-down leader. Nexopia, which ranks #12 on our Canadian Start-up Index, leapfrogs everyone and grabs the #2 spot on the comScore list with a reach of 5.6%. That's a lot of teenagers.
