Hey Tech''s

I need help! Everytime I open explorer I get 2-4 additional windows that open - one porn thing- one ebay - paypal - and some other windows. This is so annoying - all day long i am shutting these windows. I was told to run lavasoft 3 times in a row to catch everything - I have and i have run norton at the same time - it is clearing everything but as so as I restart they pop''s haven''t been deleted? How can i get rid of this - where would the files be hiding.
Please help because i am losing my mind with this.
Thank you
Crystal [:p]

Hi Crystal,

Nice to meet you.

You may want to download the Google Search tool bar... it has a pop up blocker.... I've found it works great.

Cheers,

Hey Jen,

Thanks for the tip. Actually i have the pop up blocker - what's happening is not when I open a site with a pop up window it in - its when I open explorer - my home page is yahoo - and I open it and I get a wack of windows opening.

Any suggestions??

Hi again! [:)]

Your Yahoo homepage is a web site, and it is somehow bypassing your pop up blocker.

If this is the only web site that hits you with a bunch of pop up windows, check out your (yahoo) homepage options. Otherwise just change your home page. MSN is cool too (no pop ups)

Just a thought.

Or you can try downloading Firefox browser from FireFox

It is much more secure, blocks pop up, protects your machine against many spywares, renders better than IE browser, works faster, ...

Currently it is the best browser out there.

Well as Rastin suggested, go with Firefox and the AdBlock extension. You can eliminate popups and advertisements, take the web back and your mind. (You mentioned you are losing your mind)

Often pop-ups behaving like this are signs your computer is infected with a virus. The source files causing these problems can be a challenge to track down and your best bet is to ensure your Windows software is up-to-date via http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and that you have a current anti-virus software product installed with its virus definitions also up-to-date (an anti-virus software with virus definitions that haven't been recently updated is only marginally better than no anti-virus software at all).

McAfee makes a good product and the 2005 suite of theirs just came out at around $70. However the McAfee Privacy Service 2005 isn't combatable with IIS though they promise me version 8 (the next version, 2005 = version 7) will be fully combatable. So if you use IIS to build your web apps you can't install that product.

For a right now help consider downloading McAfee's free Security Center: http://ca.mcafee.com/root/package.asp?pkgid=113 and you can also find some virus removal tools: http://ca.mcafee.com/virusInfo/default.asp?id=vrt

Best of luck - I hope your grief doesn't last [:)]

Windows SP2 has a pop-up blocker built in as well. I don't know if this works with earlier windows versions. I would recommend firefox anyway as its better than explorer. Even if you run Ad-aware, as soon as you visit a site with pop-up's they will show up again unless you have a blocker.

And the message that a popup has been blocked appears in exactly the same location as it appears on firefox and with almost same "what to do" options .... any wild guesses ....[;)] [:0]

Actually, Crystal, it sounds like you've picked up some spyware. Virus scanners and popup blockers won't help, and Lavasoft AdAware hasn't been kept up to date as well as some others, and you have to buy the "pro" version to get the realtime blocking.

Try getting SpyBot Search & Destroy (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html). During the install, make sure to include and activate the TeaTimer function when prompted - it's a realtime blocker for many types of spyware. Once it's installed, be sure to run the updater, and use the Immunize function. Then run a complete scan.

If you're running Windows XP, you can also get Microsoft's AntiSpyware Beta - it does the best job I've seen yet of finding, killing, and blocking spyware. Get it at http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx

Note that this may also require the removal, or stop the functionality, of many "free" programs, including games and utilities. Things like BonziBuddy, Comet Cursor, and everything by Gator are spyware carriers, and most will stop working if you remove their related spyware. They're not really "free", after all - the ad popups are the price you pay. Much like "free" TV channels, you have to suffer through the ads.

I don't get pop ups here is how I did it. Some of the steps might be already mentioned.
Fire fox is great but in this Microsoft dominated world some web pages just down look right…

My ultimate anti spyware/anti pop-up guide

Preparation:

1. Update you windows. Some immunization requires later versions of internet explore. Internet explore does have pop blockers too. For some stupid reasons, it might be disabled.

2. Disable Norton’s ad ware OR spyware feature. It does not do you any good other than suck up you valuable resources. Disable what every popup blocker you are using. It is waste of money (if you pay for them) and valuable resources. Some time popup blocker might be the source of pop-ups, especially if you did not pay for the software. Have you heard of the phrase “ad supported”? Windows needs every bit of resources to function better.

3. Download Ad-aware, Spybot Search and Destroy and Microsoft anti spyware (former Ginat antispyware). Every one, of these programs, has some additional spyware signatures that others don't have. Microsoft anti spyware is very good and dealing with browser hijacks.

Download Spywareblaster. This program uses internet explore/firefox built features to prevent further spyware infestation. It contains a data base of "EVIL" active-x plug-ins and web pages that contain popup codes… in another word, this program configures your system for you.

Configuration:

1. Internet explore built in pop up blocker.

Start you internet explore. Maximize there windows. On the lower right corner of the window, you will see the word “internet” with a globe beside it. On the left of that, you will see some boxes. Some time they are empty. Some time they have little icons in them. Lift click on each of theses boxes to find out the options for internet explore built in popup blocker. (second one form the left I believed)

2. Anti Spyware/anti pop-up software

Update the anti spyware signatures for all you programs, before you run any scans. Other wise you just wasting you time. (NOTE: When the program mention some thing about restart you computer, chose yes. Some spyware file is locked. Restart can unlock them) Ad-aware has an update link just above the “Start” button. Spybot has a button on the left panel. Microsoft anti spyware has a link, in its own program group, in the start menu. Spywareblaster has a link on the left panel as well.

Spywareblaster: This program is easy to configure. After you update, a link said “enable all protects” will show up. Just click on it. You can also find this link in the Quick Task section when you just start the program.

Spybot
1. In the left panel click on Immunize. On the top left of right panel, click Immunize again.
2. On the left panel (bottom), click on Tools. On the right panel click to put a check mark beside the “Hosts File”. In the left panel Click on “Hosts File”. On the upper left of right panel, click on “Add Spybot-S&D hosts list”

All directions can be cut down to one action:

Install Firefox.
Bella on Thu, March 17, 2005 10:24 PM
If only it were that simple. I run Firefox almost exclusively (IE crashes on a lot of pages, but a few still require it). It is just as susceptible to some popups when certain adware makes its way into the system.

All suggestions are quite valid. I have run a combination of both xp service pack 2 with pop up blocker enabled along with google toolbar enabled and have all but eliminated spyware and popups. i also downloaded the microsoft baseline security analyzer to check for flaws or vulnerabilities. all of these are free so i would use them.. you can also set active x controls to a higher level and see if that helps. remember to empty all temp internet files and temp files as well. i hope you gain control of your pc back again... Hi,

Ad-aware and spybot will remove the files but I bet after a reboot you still have the same problem, right?

If a virus scan turns up nothing, then I've found that using the task manager can help with this problem. I locate files that are not "windows" files and close them. Before I close them however, I note their names and search for their locations on the computer (normally the winnt\system32\ directory). Once I close them, I rename the files with a different extension (.old for example) so they can't reload themselves into memory. I then delete these files and restart the computer and "poof" the problem is gone.

I have to agree with Chad if you still get that stuff after you have done all of the previous suggestions. Also, you might have to go into "safe" mode to accomplish what Chad suggests. This will stop many of the spyware programs from installing and you will be able to delete them. Some of the programs load up and link to windows files at start up and most sypware removal programs cannot remove the spyware if this happens. Again, "safe" mode should stop this.
..
Safe Mode:
..
1. Click Start, click Shut Down, and then, in the drop-down list, click Shut down.
..
2. In the Shut Down Windows dialog box, click Restart, and then click OK.
..
3. When you see the message Please select the operating system to start, press F8.
..
I feel for you as I am currently fighting with some nasty spyware issues myself!!!
