Wattpad Hits One Billion User Minutes A Month

Posted by Techvibes Newsdesk on Fri, February 10, 2012 3:47 PM · Filed under Calgary, Edmonton, Montréal, Ottawa, Toronto, Vancouver, Victoria, Kitchener-Waterloo, Atlantic-Canada, Okanagan , Mobile · Comments

Canadian Startup of the Year Wattpad announced today on their blog that users spent more than 1 billion minutes on the service in the month of January.

According to co-founder and CEO Allen Lau growth comes from a combination of attracting new users and convincing each of those users to spend more time on the site. The average session for web users was 30 minutes, while visitors on Android devices spent an average of 28 minutes.

“We are relying more and more on new users now,” Lau told TechCrunch. Given the Android stats, in particular, “There is simply not much room to grow further (we only have 24 hours per day).”

Of those 1 billion minutes, Lau says that about one-third came from the Web, while another third came from Android, 20 percent came from iOS devices, and the remainder coming from mobile platforms like BlackBerry and Windows Phone.

Interim Liberal Leader Bob Rae has said on Twitter: "Conservatives have invoked closure to get it (Bill C-11) into a committee. They are ramming through every piece of legislation."

Still in need of a Valentine’s Day gift for your sweetheart?

Forget the candy and flowers, consumer electronics are where it’s at. A new study confirms both men and women would likely swoon over receiving a new gadget from their valentine.

The US Consumer Electronics Association says women especially are interested in new devices, according to a recent study called “The Truth about Women and Consumer Electronics.” Eight in 10 women express an interest in consumer electronics products, and 41% say they are “very interested” in consumer electronics. Google Wallet launch delayed in Canada?

Posted by Rob Lewis on Fri, February 10, 2012 10:05 AM · Filed under Calgary, Edmonton, Montréal, Ottawa, Toronto, Vancouver, Victoria, Kitchener-Waterloo, Atlantic-Canada, Okanagan , Google, Mobile · Comments

In October Techvibes reported that Google Wallet would be coming to Canada in early 2012. No word yet on when the official launch will be but it looks like its introduction to Canada could be delayed because of a number of reported vulnerabilities.

According to Security Watch's Neil Rubenking, if Google Wallet is installed on a rooted Android phone, a quick and simple brute force attack can extract the PIN and allow a thief to spend your Google Wallet funds.

A Google spokesperson responded to Rubenking's post saying that "there is no known vulnerability that enables someone to take a consumer phone and gain root access while preserving any Wallet information such as the PIN". And added "we strongly encourage people to not install Google Wallet on rooted devices and to always set up a screen lock as an additional layer of security for their phone."
