Mac? Oh God! Please don't! Friends don't let friends use Mac's.

It's like asking people to give up their children. Most Mac owners are so happy with their babies that would never want to give them up.

Get your own Linda [:)]

Agreed.

In fact, just a few weeks ago I talked a friend out of buying a Macbook (really, no joke).

Another option is to rent it from futureshop, london drugs or somewhere else...

You could easily pick up a Mac, gently used from Mac Market on West 4th or maybe Mac Station (Yaletown - Homer St. I believe). There's also an emulator for OS X that can be run on Windows machines called PearPC <http://www.pearpc.net/about.php>

Please feel free to PM me if you have any Mac specific questions, as I have been working with them since 1986~

Cheers,

You can also use Parallels which allows you run OS X, Windows, Linux, ... in the same time

If you want a Mac Linda make sure to get the Intel Macs, and since they are new in the market, I'm not sure if there are many used ones around yet.

Before you get an Intel mac, check the price against a Linux-based PC. The only advantage of a Mac (nowadays) is that OS/X is a bit more polished and user-friendly than a typical Linux desktop. That might or might not be worth the price difference, depends on you.

rox,

why do you want a mac? I've got a mac but that's for my creative projects. software is an issue too.. mac s/w you'll need to pay a bit more and with the newer intel based mac, not all mac programs are "universal" (runs both on intel and older chipset) yet.

linux is good but it depends on your experience with it and programs available for that platform.

hardward is one thing but key is apps you want to run and for what reason(s).

Whoa, thanks for the replies. I looked through craigslist and there are a couple core duos already being sold 2nd hand. I need this for work and need to run XP concurrently. Anyway, I've decided to go for a new Imac with the Intel Core duo, can't wait!!

good choice.. iMac or MacMini would be enough for your use I think...

I disagree wholeheartedly.

I have worked on both KDE environment and OS X and Linux is yet far behind for the everyday computer user. Beside there are a lot of great applications for mac that are not available on Win XP and Linux. iPhoto, iMovie, OmnigraGraffle, OmniOutliner. They just work and they are more user friendly.

A lot of the drivers are not open source and cannot be included as a part of Linux so users have to download and install them one by one. Apple, you bring it out of the box and it works with whatever devices you have (printer, digital camera)

Did I mention I've never had Virus and Worm problems in the last 6 years.

I have nothing against the other platforms ( well ok some against windows ) but this was my platform of choice and I am honestly very happy with it.

Ok, just a few things to watch out for.

The early versions of the Macbook had overheating problems and discoloration of the case.
The early version of the Macbook pro had battery problems. So, make sure that you get a serial number and check onile to see if the one you are considering is affected.

I just unwrapped my MacBook Pro 17".
It is an unbelievable machine and the software is rock solid. It does run hot, but others have said they are no hotter than the new PC laptops out there.

In my experience, Macs have more staying power than PCs.
I still have my G4 tower and a 7 year old G3 Powerbook that runs Tiger (OSX) perfectly (albeit 20 times slower than this thing). It is now slated as an entertainment unit in our living room where it streams music, shows photos, surfs the web and plays games and DVDs. (I jokingly call it my maxipod). However, I can still bring it into service as a creative machine because it also runs CS2. Try that with XP, CS2 and any 7 year old PC laptop.

I do have a P4 blah-d-blah 3.2GHZ whatever-machine too, but it is sooooo cumbersome to maintain. The kids use it for games and homework and I use it to check websites with IE (don't get me started). I just find there is always some issue with adware, spyware, AVs screwing up, security patches - sheesh. I don't have time for it.

Get a Mac. You won't regret it.

My mac is really cool, but it's like learning to drive in London...

Oh, and when are you guys gonna optimize techvibes for Safari? It's worse than firefox! And I'm NOT gonna download IE just for techvibes, (no offense you know I love u guys)

Than other PCs, you mean?

All that distinguishes a Mac nowadays are its motherboard and OS/X. Every other part in them could be put on any other PC as well.

Download Firefox Linda. IE for Mac was a mistake and it is a dead browser, unless you decide to install Windows on your new Mac too then you'd be able to run both Mac and Windows applications on your laptop

I was going to get it when it first came out but decided to wait until the new chip comes out in the fall and see what happens. I plan to install ubuntu on it as well.. that or SuSE ...

i agree that you should use firefox on it .. works great on a mac

i find it amazing how intuitive the interface is and with Vista coming, I heard it's also very good.
