How do I distribute and prioritize my keywords between the Title Tag, Headings (H1, H2, H3...etc) and the content of the Meta Tag when optimizing a site. My key words include weight loss program and other related words such as healthy, safe, fast weigh loss, diet that works, help with weight loss. I suppose there should be some sort of a hierarchy of words starting with most important ones though I am not sure which of 3 (title tag, headings, met -tag) takes precedence. Hope someone can help and let me know the strategy behind on-site seo [;)] Thx

Primary keywords should be in your title tag, and h1 tags.
your most primary keyword should be the first meta tag keyword and in your meta description.
your secondary keywords should be in h2 tags and in the meta tags.
your tertiary keywords should be in h3 tags or strong tags
each primary product page should have keywords specific to that page
please somebody correct me if i'm wrong

With my personal experiences, I found "Primary keywords should be in your title tag + description + h1 tags" work the best.
The incoming link's hyper text should have the same keywords as the title tag of the referring page.

<title>Priority keyword one</title>
<h1>Priority keyword one</h1>
<h2>Second most important</h2>
<h3>Least Important</h3>
(Meta tags are not important)

Google has recently started to use my meta tag description for the search results of a particular page on my site.
And doesn't MSN also look at meta tags?

Google will use it for the description, but it will not help your rankings...
yahoo will not even look at meta tags...
msn use old technology(inktomi) so keywords, and keyword frequency is still important...if they have havent already changed it they will to prevent same text as background style trickery...

WRT:
The incoming link's hyper text should have the same keywords as the title tag of the referring page.
So ideally I want to plant all my incoming links on the sites of other weight loss related websites?

plant the texts on your own website and if you have the leverages, then plant the texts on other websites, not necessary just weight loss related ones, but the ones with high PR. [;)]

If you have several important keywords you're better off creating content around them, and optimizing your tags for one to two keyword phrases. For example, you would have one page for, say, "weight loss pills" and "weight loss drugs" on one page (since they are 2 ways of saying the same thing) and possibly a 3rd keyword, "weight loss supplement". You should do keyword research to determine what the most popular one is, and use that one as close to the beginning of your Title Tag as possible, and also in your Page Title and often in the anchor text of your links within your site that point to that page.
Try to use a variety of keyword variations, including longer strings that get a lot of searches like: "best prescription weight loss pill" for example. I usually optimize for longer phrases because you will be relevant for the shorter ones too.
Then continue with creating content for a different group of keywords, like "weight loss surgery", "gastric bypass" and "stomach stapling" etc.
Keyword Research Tools are invaluable. You can use WordTracker for one day for about $7 if you are a site owner, or you can use Keyword Discovery for a month for about $50. I prefer KD, personally.

Optimizing EVERY page
I am a bit confused with regard to customizing each page of the website with keywords specific to that page (title tag, meta tag etc)
I have read somewhere that e-commerce sites usually do not permit the setup of different meta tags and titles on different pages unless you know how to do it. Is that true?? Is there some magic formula? Am I or am I not supposed to optimize every page for relevant title and meta tags? [:0] How do I do it properly...thx

MCSD - Thanks
Tigger - What kind of ecommerce site are you using, is it content management, dynamically driven? if you don't mind me asking.
You can certainly optimize your e-commerce product pages by putting keywords in your product descriptions. If you are not using any product descriptions, smack yourself once on the left side of your head for bad usability and once on the right side for missing the SEO opportunity :)

I think all (or most) CMS have options to go into the code-behind and change the title / meta tags.
However if you are creating from a template, all pages under that template may end up with the same title / meta tags.
In Wordpress you can customize every category template, or every page, or every post.
In Microsoft CMS you can customize every channel / section and every template
Not sure about other systems.
