I have no idea why there are multiple video formats - I am under the impression that Quicktime is better for streamiing video, but I don''t even know why I think that. Maybe all you clever people out there can tell me what the difference is.

My *guess* is in the global capitalist market, everybody wants a peice of the pie - even the internet video pie. So there are different producers of different video types, which they try to make exclusive to their own video player, each having a free version and a pay version.

Therefore you have avi, mpg, mpeg, rm, wmv, mov, and others. just a guess.

basically, it's because we humans always come up with something else to suit diff situations, a variation of a product to see, improvements, etc.

Let's use an example I can relate to [;)] :

A suit is a suit but you can buy them from Big and Tall, Sears, Zara, H&M, Eatons, Men's Wearhouse, Dunn's, etc.. or go with designers such as Armani, Alexander McQueen, Hugo Boss, Versace, Canali, Dolce and Gabbana, Valentino, Prada, Etro, etc.. or get it custom made or bespoke. Not to mention the colours, season, and occasion.

I was looking for more of a technical kind of awnser, are there situations where one is clearly better than the other or is it just a take you pick kind of thing?

Isn't that funny though - you're on a technical forum and you got all of the non-technical answers. Hehe..

Anyway, you can't download realplayer movies (rm) so they are for streaming. I think quicktime was also optimized for streaming.

Most websites have options to play the file in Windows Media Player or Quicktime, and many have the third option of RealPlayer.

You can play mpg and avi on most players.. they are almost universal.

avi is native to windows as mpeg is native to macs

other formats were created for compression reasons.

that's about all I know on the subj, but mpeg is superior in my experience.

depends on platform and audience you're targetting

There are different formats because there are different companies. I am dating myself here but back in the analog era of VHS and Beta. There were two because they are produced by different companies.

The best for web is clearly flash video (it's all I use on my site www.3dplayground.ca ) , but that's pretty pricey. The flash video encoder costs $700 or so. But if you are looking for a cheaper option either go with the highest .mpg you can get your hands on. The only problem with both quicktime and .mpg encoders the better the resolution the longer the download times. [;)]
