I was just curious? How many here use browsers other than Interent Explorer as their primary or secondary browser?

Starting myself I use Firefox and Safari

Well, considering that I'm mostly on Linux, IE has never been much of an option for me. So far as I'm concerned, any browser that doesn't suppport tabs isn't woth taking seriously anyway.

I've been using the Mozilla suite, and will switch to Firefox eventually. I also sometimes use Konquerer to read a site that is IE-specific, since it allows me to spoof using IE.

I use to work a lot on UNIX machines back in school, and now I am using OS X. Safari uses the same core as Konquerer. And I must agree with the tab browsing. I think it is time to have a javascript open tab function as well. [:)]

I split between IE and Firefox pretty evenly. I use Mozilla, Opera and Netscape on occasion for testing and Konquerer when I am using Linux here and there. I tend to use IE here on Techvibes as I find the site buggy with anything else. [:((]

On Windows we'll never get rid of IE 100% thanks to ActiveX and sites like Windows Update only working with IE.

I like the JavaScript tab idea, Rastin. That would be handy.

Obviously, a good web designer uses all the major browsers to test their work for cross-browser compatibility.

By nothing other than habit, I use IE probably 80-90% of the time. I have the Mozilla suite and Firefox on my computer, I've tried to make the switch in the past, but for some reason I can't live without a few basic shortcuts (like ctrl-o from IE for example) that don't exist in Mozilla/Firefox.

I'm a shortcut guy, I do anything I can to save that 2 milliseconds of time. For example, I use Total Commander for all of my file management, FTP, etc instead of Explorer. It's amazingly fast in comparison, if you're a keyboard user. Visit www.ghisler.com for a free demo of the software.

oh Interesting ... you know Firefox works pretty well on Techvibes (Fortunately) but I can see your point about IE.

It is nice to see the number of non IE users is increasing. I've noticed that non IE users tend to be more tech savy people, perhaps becuase they are aware of what is going on around.

I posted this quession becuase I noticed my website is recieving about 40% of non IE users, perhaps beucase of the type of demographic that might be interested to visit my website.

I switched to firefox about 5 months ago and prefer it over IE (if only for the tabbed browsing). Indecently, Mozilla Thunderbird (email) and Sunbird (calendar) are also quite good. Firefox also just released the official (non preview) release 1 which is worth upgrading to (it finally lets you organize your bookmarks alphabetically).

Yes [;)]

Well, partly that's because my main line of work is developing Linux stuff. However... years back I did use Windows for most things and Linux only occasionally, and after getting the umpteenth virus in my inbox the thought suddenly occurred to me that "if I just did all my internet activity in Linux I wouldn't have to worry about this s#@t trashing my system". So I switched over, made a real effort to do everything I could in Linux and have never looked back - and I've never had any worries of my own from viruses again.

It's got easier to do that since then, too. Back when I converted OpenOffice wasn't really an acceptable substitute for MS Office, and the e-mail clients weren't quite as smooth, and there were still lots of web sites that really required IE. All that has changed for the better in the last four or so years.
pwong99 on Thu, November 18, 2004 9:06 AM
Firefox all the way. I only use IE when a website doesn't work in Firefox.

The only thing I miss from IE, is that if you type an address, and that address is in your "Favorites", it would automatically complete the rest of the address. I don't understand why Firefox doesn't have that option. It only comes up with addresses that are in your "History".

Other than that, I love the browser!

Great ... I am mainly a UNIX user as well, perhaps becuase back in school we use to work on Sun Solaris terminals, and Linux boxes in computer lab. In my studio I am using Mac OS X. People find it odd when I say for the last 4 years I've never had any Virus and Worm problems. But it's true ...

I've installed Firefox, thunderbird and open office on the windows machine in the other company that I work (Peach Interior Design) everybody loved it and picked up fast. Perhaps it is time for us to promote Open Source and its benefits on techvibes too [;)]

Hey Gadget-girl,

If you do web design work as well try downloading the Web Devloper extension for Firefox. It comes with a set of realy useful tools that soon you wouldn't be able to do without. A lovely Javascript debugger, options to highlight css divisions and blocks, and dynamically generated GUI elements, view cookie information and much more. Now I am no longer using Dreamweaver. Just Firefox and BBEdit as my editor all I need.

I would love to see some of the Galeon features like making a tab as a new window. Miss some of those great Galeon features.

I am unable to do away with the Mozilla browser as mozplugger requires Firefox. Has any one come across a mozplugger variant that does not need Mozilla?

Since i hardly ever surf the net and i use IE for testing my websites, IE is still kinda my main browser. I also have Firefox, Opera and Netscape installed.

However, if i do spend the day surfing competitors, and otherwise looking for ideas and answers on the internet, i use Opera. Opera's pretty quick and imho, even a little faster than Firefox. IE is just too slow to be considered.

Besides, i just don't trust IE for surfing, not since i got my one and only virus from browsing some website, years ago. If i didn't have Zone Alarm installed, i woulda been a goner for sure. the malicious code wanted to use my tftp to download a worm on my machine, and Zonealarm stopped tftp from contacting homebase for it's payload. So i only got half of the Code Red virus, and not the most dangerous part either. Umm, at least i remember it being Code Red, could have been some other virus though.

Anyway. IE bad. Other browsers good.

I use IE and Firefox. We are test our software on all the browsers to make sure the effect looks correct. Mind you we use Flash for mapping. Every browser we tried, our product worked great.

Still learning and playing with Firefox. It has some great tools.

Aristocrat thanks for the hint - I will take a look at the Web Developer tools. I'm currenly redoing our web-site, along with getting the office repainted. A fun X-mas!

Oh you will love Web Developer tools. I ditched Dreamweaver since then, I'm using BBEdit in combination with Firefox and Web Developer tools. Then I test the end results on IE.

IE has issues on CSS and Javascript DOM objects in terms of being W3C compliant. It is supposed to be compliant, but it is a very hasty implementation. I hope they release an updated IE sometime soon.

Seems IE is somewhat a necessary evil for most of us who work developing websites, and it’s such a chore at that, seeing how you have to “cheat” and find workarounds for a lot of things, like .png graphics and such. It’s no wonder people these days are switching to Firefox and other browsers in flocks, I mean just when was the last time that Microsoft updated its “flagship browser” again?

I actually prefer Opera over Firefox, it isn’t as big a memory hog as Firefox and is now free.

I agree. I use Galeon on my Desktop, but the new system I'm building on my laptop uses Firefox because I don't want to be hassled setting up GNOME any more. Galeon is slated to disappear into Epiphany, but it would be nice to see Firefox get some of its better features.

$i

Why would I want to get rid of Firefox?

As for IE... BAH [:(] I only use it when I have to, which is mostly to make sure my web pages work in its broken rendering.

Also, there are still a few broken web sites around that haven't noticed not everyone uses IE yet. This one, for example. What is it, TechVibes people? Do you WANT to seem uncool and blow all your geek cred? We've complained about this what seems like a million times but it never gets fixed...
Mon, November 21, 2005 7:47 PM
Well as much as I know about Techvibes people they are comming mostly from Marketing background and not very technical. Perhaps the site needs to be friendly to the Majority of IE users out of 32000 + registered users who don't bother showing up at the forums.

I wonder what the Techvibe's web stat logs show about the population of Firefox users on these forums.

Hi all,

I am actually using Netscape 7.2 and it works even faster than Firefox. Two reasons. One, I am mostly running Linux and I haven't found Netscape 8.0 Linux version yet. Two, for some reason JRE plugin shared object doesn't seem to want to load in my Firefox and hence I can't run Java applets in Firefox, I tried fiddling with environment variables and different JRE versions but to no avail. No problems, I was able to link JRE .so in Netscape just fine. Netscape in Linux is just flying at warp speed [:)] What I find annoying though are those profiles that I am being asked at Netscape startup all the time which makes me use Firefox when I don't need JRE and need mmplayer plugin to play radio.

The odd time a web site appears broken with a non-IE browser (such as this forum), I will use IE with the Maxthon add-on (gives me tabbed browsing, and pop-up blocking is on by default. Yes, I know that comes with XP SP2, but I am using Windows 2000).

I am writing my own browser. It's actually not that hard. You can either do it using VC++ CWebBrowser class (MFC) or Java getURL() method calls and such by appending the results in TextArea or some other component. Whichever way, you can implement your own browser and add whichever functionalities you want to it.

Oh yeah, and don't forget the ATL-based BHOs, they are hard to implement but you can do pretty much whatever you want to your IE with them.

If I had a choice between Java and VC++, the latter wins.
