System Engineer

Job Title: Systems Engineer (6 month contract)
Division / Program: Information Technology
Location: 240 Edward St., Aurora, Ontario
Reports to: Manager, Information Technology Support
Pay: $25 per hour

The System Engineer is responsible for:

• Acting as a technical resource for department staff, leading problem solving, coordinating projects, and providing advice and guidance.
• Developing, recommending and implementing solutions that are cost effective while meeting business needs.
• Coordinating IT projects, conducting preliminary analyses, preparing reports and recommendations, implementing decisions, documenting what was done including lessons learned and developing procedures for maintenance, backup and emergency recovery.
• Performing Active Directory/Windows 2003 server administration, performance tuning and troubleshooting
• Performing Exchange 2003/SQL 2000/2005 server administration, performance tuning and troubleshooting
• Performing Backup Exec administration, performance tuning and troubleshooting
• Performing Network administration, performance tuning and troubleshooting
• Performing APACHE/TOMCAT/IIS server administration, performance tuning and troubleshooting.
• Training and working with Tier 1 support staff to assure high quality support
• Creating and maintaining system and network documentation for Tier 1 support
• Monitoring Microsoft products and multiple Firewalls to identify and correct errors, observe trends and ensure optimum performance.
• Testing and implementing service packs and security updates.
• Monitoring technology to evaluate new software and hardware and identify new products to support the organization's long term plans.
• Troubleshooting a variety of escalated technical issues.
• Participating in daily team meetings to share information, resolve problems and report on progress; troubleshooting technical problems with users; providing user support, answers questions and resolves issues.

Qualifications: (M) = Must or (P) = Preferred

a) Education:
• Completion of Post Secondary Education in Information Technology (M)
• Microsoft and Cisco Certification (CCNA, CCDA, MCSE) (P)

b) Experience:
• 3 – 5 years experience with Microsoft and Cisco and/or Nortel operating systems & equipment (M)
• 3 – 5 years experience in troubleshooting, configuring, installations (M)
• 3 – 5 years providing Tier 1 and Tier 2 support, specifically to Microsoft server technologies (M)
• 1 – 3 years experience with Backup Exec or other related technologies (M)
• Experience with routing protocols, VPN’s, VLAN’s, knowledge of Layer 1, 2, and 3 devices (M)
• Experience with AD / Server 2003, MS clustering, VMware, Enterprise SMTP messaging technologies, Exchange 2003/2007, MSSQL 2000/2005, DR/Application availability, IBM/DELL servers (M)

c) Skills, Knowledge & Abilities:
• Experience with Active Directory/Windows 2003 administration (M)
• Experience with Exchange server administration, performance tuning and troubleshooting (M)
• Excellent command of the English language in both written and oral forms (M)
• Excellent interpersonal and people skills (M)
• Good organizational skill (written and oral) (M)
• Ability to work both independently and in a team with minimal direction (M)
• Must be self motivated and resourceful (M)
• Must work well with time restraints and prioritizing (M)
• May have occasional travel requirements (M)
• Must have positive and upbeat attitude (M)
• Comfortable working in a fast paced and challenging environment (M)
• Experience with APACHE/TOMCAT server administration, troubleshooting and performance tuning (P)
• Thorough understanding of how web-enabled applications interact with the database and the ability to determine the root of performance issues (P)
• Experience with IIS server administration, performance tuning and troubleshooting (P)
