Waterloo's Research In Motion is slated to lay off a minimum of 2,000 employees in the coming weeks as part of a major global restructuring, according to several people close to the company. RIM has roughly 16,500 employees worldwide.
If true—and it seems that it cannot be false judging by the quantity of inside sources—this will be RIM's second significant downsizing in the past year.

Last week, the US Department of Defence awarded Research In Motion's BlackBerry 7 a security certification. Today, RIM's platform got a similar nod of approval in the UK.
Indeed, RIM's BlackBerry, which remains the most secure mobile platform, has been approved by CESG, the National Technical Authority for Information Assurance in the UK, for government use.

Bad news for RIM's BlackBerry today. Vancouver's Absolute Software, a provider of firmware-embedded, endpoint security and management solutions, has released Absolute Manage 6.1, which includes expanded Bring Your Own Device support for smartphones and laptops.

Lloyed Lobo is right in saying that Nokia’s Lumia 900 is getting some pretty solid reviews. Pulled videos aside, Nokia’s goal is to be the premier provider of smartphones that run on Microsoft’s Mango operating system here in North America.
You could say that Nokia has basically built a competitive minimum viable product with a few basic features added in an attempt to re-capture some of the mobile market. The phone is only available at Rogers in Canada but is selling well worldwide.

Research In Motion's newest mobile platform, BlackBerry 7, has been officially approved for use by the US Department of Defence, the Waterloo company said today. BB7 has won security certification and specified BlackBerrys are now listed on the department's unified communications approved product list. Those models are the Bold 9900 and 9930, the Torch 9850 and 9860, and the Curve 9360.

When will RIM catch a break? It was only last month that Dutch semiconductor company NXP sued the Waterloo-based BlackBerry maker for patent infringement. Now, a patent troll has emerged from the shadows to kick RIM while it's down.
Seattle-based shell company Hunter Point Ventures has come forth to claim that RIM's smartphones violate a "method for musical playlist selection in a portable audio device" that it owns. Specifically, HPV says RIM is infringing on US Patent 7667123.

Mentioning the word "business" a whopping eight times in a short speech makes it pretty obvious who the target demographic is.
